name; Asuka Langley Soryu nicknames/alias; Second Children, The Second Child gender; Female orientation; Heterosexual age; 16 birthdate; December 4, 2001 blood type: AB
appearance
height; 5'4" weight; 110 lbs. hair; Red eyes; Blue marks/defining features; Asuka is usually defined by the fact that she looks European when she is in Japan yet is from Japanese decent. She has a few scars over her body (including one giant one on her right arm and one near her eye) from when her Eva was attacked, but for the most part, she is pretty mark free. She tends to wear colorful dresses and A10 Nerve Clips in her hair.
first impression; God, what a bitch. in depth; Asuka is scared, vulnerable, and lonely on the inside. She feels she has no one and wants no one. She is worried about becoming dependent on any single person, wanting to take care of herself as a first priority due to the disappointments she has had in her past. She is unhappy, in all aspects, but she covers it well. She uses her arrogance to hide her true self-doubt and loathing, often reacting strongly to things simply so she can react in some way. Her mind is cold and bitter and she does not know if she’ll ever even love someone.
Her temper is large and quick and she often reacts with physical violence to people who irritate her too greatly. She hates anyone who tries to be better than her and finds it hard to connect to people and make friends. However, when she does make them, she cares for them greatly and tries to be the best friend she can possibly be. Deep down she is a good person, she just has a lot of issues that stop her from expressing herself in many ways.
childhood & family history
Asuka was born to George Soryu and Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu on December 4 in the year 2001. She was a wide-blue-eyed child with red fuzz already forming on the top of her hair who wanted to take in the world around her. It was very clear from the moment she was brought into this world that she was bright and her mother and father couldn’t have been more proud to have produced such a gorgeous baby girl. Asuka was a happy child for the first three years though her parents were more often than not busy with their own jobs. Her father was a highly practiced doctor and her mother was one of the heads in the GEHIRN project (something that would later become NERV’s third branch) in Germany and the development of the Eva Unit 02, the first Production Type. Her mother was very into her work and often put it before a good portion of her other priorities.
She was the subject of the contact experiment with Unit 02, but only the maternal aspect of her soul was bound within the Eva, and the experiment failed. It left Kyoko completely unstable – she began to believe a doll was her daughter rather than Asuka herself and simply referred to the young girl as “that girl over there.” She was soon admitted to a mental institution. George began to have an affair with her doctor, something both Asuka and her mother were always very well aware of though neither ever said anything, one for obvious reasons. Her life continued like this for another two years – it was then that Asuka found out that she would be the one to pilot the Eva her mother had been working so hard on. She felt overly proud, wanting to inform her mother of the happy news, and immediately went to the hospital. When she’d pulled open the door in her excitement, however, she found her mother hanging, the doll she’d thought was Asuka for so long hanging beside her as well.
Asuka never coped.
At the funeral, Asuka’s grandmother informed her that she was a “strong girl” but that if she needed to cry, it was okay. She told her mother that she needed to take care of herself from now on, deciding that from that point on she would never cry again. Because of this, she represses a good deal of her emotions and has to deal with a rather large amount of emotional scarring from her mother’s illness and suicide, which leaves her vulnerable and broken when she isn’t putting up her front.
Asuka began her training with Unit 02, the same unit that had caused her mother’s death, in a way, immediately, and before long, she was having a 90% sync rate with the machine. She was able to control it with ease and didn’t exhaust herself too quickly. Consistently told she was the best pilot the German branch of NERV had ever seen, she became rather arrogant of her abilities. When Kaji-san arrived in Germany to be her new guardian, she became even cockier, constantly wanting to show off to him and doing her best to do so. She trained harder and bragged about her abilities every chance she got. He was cute, and smart, and funny, and cute, and awesome, and… and… did she mention cute? She had become absolutely smitten and she made sure it was completely obvious. She spent a lot of her time around him – as much of it as she could even – and she didn’t stop for years. At age fourteen, he finally told her that it was time to leave for Japan – angels were attacking and she was needed to help the First and Third Children with their mission. Reluctantly (seemingly, at least – she was actually very excited to finally fight) she agreed, and the two left with the Eva Prototype for the island in the East.
She didn’t go directly to NERV she made herself at home in Japan rather quickly, though people were surprised to see a person who was clearly European speaking fluent Japanese. No one would have been able to tell it was a quarter of her blood from that country. She began to become fond of a video game arcade in Tokyo 3 which she went to on a frequent basis. One day, she was attempting to get a toy from a machine, but when it refused to work, she began to kick and scream at it furiously. A set of three boys came about and, given her flailing, had managed to see up her skirt. She informed them that the price would be 100 yen (each, of course) and that they had to hand it over. A boy, later to be known as Toji, began to argue with her, and during they fight, she bumped into what could only be described as a thug. Irritated enough already, she became rather irate when he said that he and his gang would beat the crap out of them, and instead decided to take them on singlehandedly. She beat each boy to a pulp, managing to punch one innocent bystander in the face by accident. When she had won, she left, thoroughly angry and ready to whimper to Kaji about what horrible people there were in Tokyo 3.
A few days later, she was finally taken to NERV headquarters to meet the other children. She was hardly showing her joy over it, passing it off as though it really were nothing, but her shock was very evident when the boys he’d accidently punched in the arcade who had been friends with the horrid Toji one was the Third Child. She immediately showed her distaste and teased him from the spot. They were forced to work together frequently, as well as attend school together and both lived under Misato Katsuragi’s roof together. They were forced to have synchronized missions to defeat Angels and eventually, despite herself, she found her feelings for him going from hate, to friendship, and eventually to crush.
Things got worse. Angel attacks became more frequent. NERV began to become a distrusted cooperation as they continued underground experiments on Angels to figure out where they came from, how they worked, and whether they could use them for their own purposes. None of the people working for them really knew what was going on. Things became harder, times rougher, and eventually, people began to die. As the world became engulfed in a supernatural world, the chosen children were the only ones who could save it.
During one battle, Asuka was attacked by an Angel which managed to tear her apart – quite literally. When the Angel ripped the limbs from her Eva, she shut down. Shinji was able to save her, but she was lost in a coma and wasn’t able to even build the will to live.
Months later, she finally awoke, and never wanted to pilot again. However, she realized that she was needed and forced herself to once again pilot her now fixed Eva. During the battle, she successfully disables all nine opponents; however, Unit 02's power ran out, and the MP Evas' S² Engines allowed them to remain functional even after being severely being damaged and mutilated. They proceeded to eviscerate and dismember Unit 02 using their Lance of Longinus replicas, thus causing Asuka's body to actually suffer the wounds inflicted to the machine and apparently killing her – though no one saw her entry plug destroyed. During this final assault, Asuka was briefly able to reactivate Unit 02, but only enough for it to move its arm slightly, nowhere near the full berserker mode that Shinji is able to achieve when his Eva should not be functioning.
Asuka managed to escape her entry plug before they could kill her. Her Eva was destroyed, but she managed to find Shinji. Her mind is completely shattered and she still finds herself unable to move on, so when Shinji attacks and strangles her, ready to destroy the only living human besides himself left after the Third Impact, she does not fight. However, he stops himself, falling to his knees, and sobbing into her chest. The two were left before the ruin of their city, neither knowing quite what to do with themselves. How do you function as the last two people on Earth – or at least in Tokyo 3?
Although they knew they would have to more or less repopulate, they tried their best to ignore it, trying to get themselves back to normal, to cope with what they had been through. Because of this, Asuka became closer than ever to Shinji, and not simply because he was the only one left for her to even become close to. She saw how kind and gentle he was, how insecure he may have been but the love that he could easily show. She’d truly started to fall for him. The two became closer and closer, though Asuka never found herself able to admit her feelings to him due to her fragile and vulnerable state.
Now, she finds herself in this new world. Furious by the fact that she has been taken away from the only world she's ever known, Asuka has received her old temper back, and she has no problem expressing it to anyone.
